Hush Puppies are the heart of American casual. First introduced in 1958 when a shoe salesman passed through Tennessee and was fed a delicious meal of catfish and hushpuppies. When the salesman asked how hushpuppies got their strange name, he was told it came from soldiers who tossed deep fried cornmeal to their barking dogs to quiet them down, or "Hush, puppies." At the time "barking dogs" was another way to say aching feet. Since hushpuppies were seen as the way to cure your dogs from barking, the salesman's new line of soft suede shoes got their name.
